Different Vitamins that Ensure Oral Health

Essential nutrients including vitamins and minerals are essential to maintain proper oral health. Here, we will discuss how different vitamins help in promoting teeth and gum health.

Vitamin D
Vitamin D is essential for absorption of calcium and hence, required for the development and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth. It also prevents inflammation of the gums. It is obtained by the exposure of your body to sunlight. Fish liver oils, egg yolk, milk and milk products are the common food sources of vitamin D.

Vitamin C
Adequate amounts of vitamin C promote the formation of connective tissue in gums. So, deficiency of this vitamin may cause bleeding in gums. It also prevents the formation of plaque around the teeth which cause stains and cavities. Citrus fruits, dark green vegetables, tomatoes and strawberries are the food sources of vitamin C.

Vitamin B
Vitamin B plays an important role in maintaining oral health. It prevents inflammation of tongue and mucous membrane of mouth, discoloration of gum tissues, and gum diseases. Its deficiency causes burning sensation in mouth creating difficulty in swallowing. Therefore, include vitamin B-rich foods such as eggs, nuts, bananas, leafy vegetables, and fortified cereals. Having vitamin B complex supplements can help reduce dental and gum diseases.

Apart from these, vitamin A, that is found in beef, cheese, liver, and eggs, helps in healing process of inflamed gum tissues. Vitamin E is considered to relieve soreness of gums during infant teething. So, have foods with high amounts of these vitamins or take essential vitamin supplements daily.
