Nightgowns are the most oldest variety of nightwear which is popular since many centuries. Strictly speaking the tradition of wearing nightwear for women has started with these gowns only. With the changing trends and the views of the designers they were made in to many varieties now a days. However, the most common and the popular variety of nightgown is the knee length variety. The remaining things are meant for special occasions and are usually worn in privacy.

In ancient days nightgowns are worn by both men and women which are similar to the mans shirt but with longer lengths. These gowns were often made with silk. However, these days we can find a huge variety of things rich in colors, sizes, shapes and designs. According to the taste of the individual one can buy the nightgown of their own choice.

Baby doll variety are the one among the occasional nightgowns which are used. They are usually with thins straps or none at all and the skirt part of the gown hangs above the knee level. Chemises and negligees are the ones which belong to the similar group.

Teddies are another variety which are not actually the nightgowns. They look similar to swimsuits or leotards. They are made of different fabrics.

Next comes the peignoirs, which are of floor length and made of sheer material. They have spaghetti straps and are tightly fitted. Also available in different kinds of fabrics.

All these varieties which are mentioned above are not used for regular purposes. They don't serve any purpose like the regular nightwear. They are chosen based on the personal interests of the people and are often used for special occasions.

Taking about the regular night gowns which are used widely for every day use, they are not only available in cotton but also in several materials like the silk, satin and flannel. They range from thin summer gowns with no sleeves to thick flannel gowns which protect us from cold winds.
