It also deals with the investigation of causes, processes and effects of oral diseases.

Treating oral lesions formed in the mouth is the main purpose of oral pathology. Oral pathology is a study of causes and effects of oral diseases which are essential for curing and developing the preventive programs. In simple words, it can be explained as the branch of pathology that deals with the structural and functional changes in cells, tissues, and organs of the oral cavity that cause or are caused by the disease.

There are many types of diseases that affect the oral cavity of a person and these can only be diagnosed through microscopic examination. To treat these diseases, there are two types of oral pathologies.

1) Common oral pathology:
Traumatic ulcer, aphthous ulcer, odontogenic infection, mucocoele, benign migratory, glossitis (geographic tongue), pseudo membranous Candidiasis (thrush), heck's disease, primary hermetic Gingivitis are some of the diseases where common oral pathology comes into picture.

2)Newborn oral pathology:
Inclusion cysts, congenital epulis, melanoma neurectodermal tumor of infancy, partial ankyloglossia, natal/ neonatal teeth are some of the diseases where new born oral pathology comes into picture.

As germs are the common and major causes for dental problems. Hence, oral pathology that deals with the problems associated with the pathogens (like bacteria, germs, etc.), is given high significance in dentistry.

What is Meant by Dental Infection?

Infected teeth is also known as a root abscess. It is a pus-filled swelling, which occurs as a result of a common disorder called as tooth decay.

Improper hygiene of teeth also leads to dental infection. Usually, dental infections can affect any person but they are mostly seen in children and young adults. Hence, tooth loss is a common in younger people. They are usually caused by either the tooth or the surrounding gum related problems.

The damage is caused by certain dietary habits and also improper timely dental care. They may also occur in people who are suffering from medical problems such as (diabetes, post-radiation/ chemotherapy cancer care etc).

When it comes to tooth infections, nerve is mainly effected because it is present in the center of the tooth and feeds out through the end of the root. Because of this pathway, when the nerve dies or gets infected, it provides a nice route for the bacteria to infect the surrounding structures.

Once the bacteria gets out of the tooth, they eat away the bone supporting both that tooth and any adjacent teeth. Eventually this can cause the loss of one or more teeth, but it may also cause extensive swelling into the surrounding structures or spaces like it may swell eyes shut, or even may proceed under the jaw, which can in turn prevent the swallowing and blocks the airway of a person.

Tooth abscess should not be left untreated. Untreated dental infection can be very serious and can make life miserable which can lead to hospitalization. So, cleaning the teeth regularly is the most important thing in getting rid of the dental infection.

When are Vitamin D Supplements Necessary?

Vitamins are the essential organic nutrients which are considered to aid in various functional activities of the body. Vitamin supplements have been in use these days to support required supply of vitamins. People of all ages can be given vitamin supplements. Here let's know when you can use vitamin D supplements.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin which ensures calcium absorption and is essential to maintain the growth and health of bones. Deficiencies in vitamin D causes a condition called rickets which includes softened and weakened bones in kids. In adults, vitamin D deficiency results in a serious bone disease called osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition where the bone tissue becomes thinner and the bone density loses over time. In order to cure these deficiencies, it is necessary to take vitamin D supplements.

Breastfeeding infants should also be given vitamin D supplements as human milk does not contain vitamin D. The vitamin is naturally obtained from sunlight. It is said that sunlight enhances the production of vitamin D in your body. Hence, adequate amounts of sunlight too is required to maintain the natural levels of the vitamin. However, people living in regions which receive less sunshine cannot synthesize the vitamin and therefore, require vitamin D supplements.

People having darker skin have higher amounts of melanin which reduces the skin's ability to produce vitamin D and therefore, even dark skinned individuals take vitamin D supplements. These supplements should also be given to older adults who has skin that is inefficient to form vitamin D. These are some of the situations where the use of vitamin D supplements becomes necessary for various age groups of individuals.

Know About the Dip Strip Drug Test for Marijuana

Drug testing became popular in many places like the schools, offices, traffic incidents and for legal proceeding. The main reason for the increased popularity of these drug tests is the increased number in the people who are abusing the drugs. Irrespective of all the age groups this drug abuse is becoming a habit for each and every individual. Hence the need for the drug test is also increasing.

For now let us know about the dip strip drug test of marijuana using the method of urinalysis. This test is based on the principle of competitive antibody binding, a highly accurate immuno chemical reaction between antigens and antibodies. In this test the cut off for marijuana is 50ng/ml of THC metabolites, as set by SAMHSA. This method is fast, reliable, and inexpensive and the results are obtained in 3-5 minutes.

Procedure: The sample of urine has to be collected in a non metal sterile container. The strip has to be removed from the foil pouch and its end has to be inserted in to the sample for 5 seconds. After 5 seconds it has to be removed from the sample and placed face up on the clean, flat surface. The results are to be read exactly after 5 minutes and the readings made after 5 minutes are not valid.

Results: In any drug test there will be three possible outcomes. Negative, positive and invalid. Similarly in this test the results are determined using the two color lines that appear on the test strip. The presence of two color lines on the test strip indicates a negative result for THC. It indicates that the THC is below 50ng/ml and is considered as passing the test.

On the other hand the appearance of any one of the two lines shows that the result is positive for THC. This is considered failing a drug test and should be sent for further testing.

The final one is the invalid result. If no clear lines appear on the strip then the test is considered as an invalid test and needs further testing.
