Marijuana Abuse by Pregnant Women, Risks Baby Life

Studies conducted in male and female individuals revealed that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active component of marijuana, inhibits reproductive functions. The compound causes either depression of reproductive hormones or has short-term effect. It also interferes with early pregnancy and implantation of the embryo. There is also a loss of pregnancy in certain cases. Pregnant women are advised to avoid usage of marijuana that is harmful to fetal development. The gestation period for mothers who consume the drug is shorter. Babies born to marijuana abused mothers are underweight. The babies of mothers who smoke marijuana have higher mutation rates. Also children of those type are hyperactive and impulsive. Babies born to such mothers show altered responses to increased tremors, visual stimulation, and a high-pitched cry that indicates problems in the development of nervous system. Marijuana consumption by a nursing mother is also risky to the baby. The THC passes to the baby through the breast milk in which the concentration of THC is more than that in blood. A study report says that the drug usage by the mother in the first month of breastfeeding impairs the infant's motor development that alters the control of muscle movement.
