How to Deal with Employment Harassment?

Harassment at workplaces is common these days. The reasons may be many but the only common effect of harassment is increased stress. Many people are harassed and discriminated based on the performance of work, gender, age, and others. It is very difficult for one to handle such situations. Here are some tips you can follow to deal with employment harassment.
  • When you do not feel comfortable due to extreme and unbearable actions at workplace due to co-workers or management, then it is to be understood that you are harassed.
  • Find the proper reasons of harassment faced by you frequently.
  • Warn the particular person or group of people harassing you that its not acceptable. Ask the concerned person to stop the issue saying that you are being disturbed by it.
  • If they realize that it is really hurting you, they would stop harassing. Otherwise, warn them that you will take the issue to the higher level.
  • You can take help from your friends for dealing the issue with the concerned persons or management.
  • Make a record of date and time you are harassed. Also collect witnesses for ensuring it.
  • Check if the person is responsible for harassing any other employees in the past and make a record of it. This can make your case much stronger when submitting the details to higher officials.
  • Contact with the concerned people of management for making a complaint regarding the matter formally.
  • Provide the documents you have collected which help in proving the issues.
  • Check whether any disciplinary action is taken on the person responsible for harassment or discrimination.
  • If no action is taken against the person, then you can file a complaint with Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). You can also file a case against the employer in a court.
  • You can take help of an attorney for assisting you in all the processes.

Better handle the harassment situations as early as possible. Do not hesitate or fear for taking in-time action.
