Tips for Taking Diet During Pregnancy

During the pregnancy, along with doing exercise it is important to take a good diet. An adequate diet should be taken, such that it allows to gain weight over the nine months. Best diet for a pregnant women is one with a variety of different foods. A pregnant woman generally needs approximately 2500 calories per day, this is 300 calories extra than a normal women needs.
  • Eating more fruits and vegetables is good because these provide vitamins and minerals and fibers. Eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day is necessary.
  • Starch foods like bread, potatoes, breakfast cereals, rice, pasta, noodles, maize, millet, oats, sweet potatoes, yams and cornmeal contains more vitamins and fiber and they give less calories.
  • Proteins are largely present in meat, fish, poultry, eggs, beans, pulses and nuts.
  • Dairy foods such as milk, cheese and yoghurt are important because they contain calcium and other nutrients that your baby needs.
  • It is better to eat foods like oils, salad dressings, cream, chocolate, crisps, biscuits, pastries, ice cream, cake, puddings and fizzy drinks in small amounts because they contain high sugar levels and saturated fatty acids.
  • Cook all meat and poultry thoroughly so that there are no traces of pink meat or blood in the food, if not the baby may be infected with toxoplasma which may cause seizures, jaundice or brain defects to the baby.
  • It is better to avoid foods like liver, pate, eggs and some types of fish like shark, marlin and swordfish.
  • During pregnancy don't take high doses of vitamin supplements, drink only pasteurized or UHT milk.
  • It is better to avoid peanuts if the pregnant ladies are suffering from any types of allergies.
  • Before eating wash fruits, vegetables and salads to remove all traces of soil, which may contain toxoplasma.
  • It is better to avoid foods that contain caffeine like coffee, tea and chocolate because consuming high levels of caffeine may result in babies having a low birth weight, which can increase the risk of health problems in later life.
