Alcohol Abuse and Effects in Older People

Alcohol abuse has become most common in kids, adults and even older people throughout the world. Though alcohol abuse is considered to cause serious health effects in individuals, it leads to much more dangers among older people.

The effect of alcohol is different in younger adults and senior people. The high amount of alcohol consumption by elderly make them more likely to have accidents including falls, fractures and car crashes. It also leads to a number of physical symptoms rising higher risk of injury or even death. Excess drinking in elderly people can lead to the onset of cancer, liver damage, immune system disorder and brain damage. Even worsening conditions such as osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and diabetes may be seen. It increases the risk of increased confusion or forgetfulness. It also rises the risk of problems such as heart attacks. It is found that alcohol usage by older people make it hard for doctors to find and treat some medical problems. For instance, changes in heart and blood vessels may occur because of alcohol and these changes cause dull pain which might be an indication of heart attack.

The elderly people may get used to alcohol for many reasons. Treating the alcoholic elderly is very difficult because of their weakened body and health conditions. It is, therefore, necessary to stop or avoid them from drinking.
