Measures to be Taken by a Babysitter When a Child Becomes Sick

It seems that a nanny care or a babysitting job is simple and fine. But it has its own risks at certain circumstances. Suppose that the child you are taking care of becomes sick while babysitting. Then it is important that you act accordingly and handle the situation. It is better to know about certain issues as to what has to be done when a child becomes sick.

  • Inspect the situation quickly. Know about the cause of a child becoming sick. If the cause is known, correct medication can be given. However, if you could not make sure as to what happened to the child, call the emergency call 911 or the parents depending upon the situation.
  • You should ask the parents regarding the medicines that they use for children. Also make sure if the child has any allergies. The list of medicines should be kept in hand and given at the time of illness. Care should be taken that proper dosage of medicine is being given.
  • You should be calm and make the child feel that nothing has happened to him. If you get worried, the child also panic and this may worsen the situation more.
  • If a child becomes sick suddenly, the parents should be informed. This makes them decide as to when to return home, based on the condition. Otherwise they would be angry on you and you would not find your job comfortable.
  • When the child is suffering from fever, sponge the the child repeatedly with a cloth. This would help in reducing the temperature.
  • Certain first aid courses have to be learned by the babysitter. If a situation rises that the child has fallen somewhere or becomes sick suddenly, you need to do first aid.
  • Make the child sleep and assure him that he would be well once he wake up.
