According to the National Roadside Survey made in 2007, by National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration’s (NHTSA), night time drivers and weekend illegal drug abused and prescription drug abused are more than 16%. More than 11% are abusing illicit drugs.
During an year prior to the survey by National Drug on Drug Use and Health, in the year 2008, it is estimated that 10 million people of the age group more than 12 years are driving under the influence of illicit drugs. This is nearly equal to 4 % of the population of the age 12 and even above and 4.2% in 2007 and 4.7% in 2002.
The percentage is highest for the persons of age group 18 to 25 in 2008 and it is 12.3%. In 2008, 7.2% of the 16 and 17 years teens drove under the influence of illicit drugs. The percentage has been increased with the age and it reached to 26.1% among the age group of persons around 21 to 25 years. This drugged driving is more among youth and when it comes to people above 25 years, the rates are being decreased continuously.
Even the male percent of drugged driving is more and is twice that of female percent and they are 16% and 9% respectively.
